So I see.

Looks like I have to eat my words about Swan. John Sikela seems to be the other notable Superboy artist.

In any event, I wasn't reading comics in the fifties, so my exposure was mostly to the George Papp Superboy, and that's the one that stayed with me.

I guess most fans would want an archive that collects the early Swan material (as would I for that matter).

Papp would be my second favorite Superboy artist, after Swan, and my all-time favorite Krypto the Super-Dog artist. Papp's Krypto was adorable -- those big, soulful eyes...

Yes, Sikela was still around as late as '58. And don't forget about Al Plastino.

George Papp was always THE Superboy artist to me. I guess it's my age. It wasn't too long after I started collecting that I got "The Super-Weakling from Space." I didn't realize that was Papp's first Superboy story. My recollection was that the main Superboy artists of the time were the two men whose names I would later learn to be Papp and Plastino.

I also preferred Papp's rendition of Green Arrow over Lee Elias. At the time, I HATED Elias' GA. What'd I know. I was a dumb kid.

Don't tell anyone, because I know this is anathema, but I also preferred Papp's Green Arrow to Kirby's!

I don't have my copy anymore so I can't look this up:

Everyone of my age probably remembers the dreaded house ad for the Superboy comic that was noticably without the "STILL 10¢" box in the corner. What's up wit this," we thought.

We soon discovered that it was because DC comics were for the first time in comics history raising its prices to 12¢!!

This Superboy comic featured Lana Lang in the foreground with her home-made "Superboy Secret Identity Detection Kit." I think she was making a plaster cast of Clark's or Superboy's footprint in order to compare it to the other's later.

It was a pretty cool two-part story. Pete Ross was going out of his mind trying to live his own life and still protect Superboy's secret 24/7 while Lana was on another of her rampages.

I remember as a kid how jarring it was after reading Part One to turn the page and discover that Part Two was by A DIFFERENT ARTIST! George Papp did one part, and another artist the other. This just wasn''t done back then!

My question to my fellow Old Farts is Who drew the second part of the story? Was it the stalwart Al Plastino, or someone else?

Inquisitive, calcifying minds want to know.

The Superboy comic you describe is no. 93, but the Lana Lang "Detection Kit" story is listed in the GCD as the 2nd story in the book (with the 1st story by Plastino), and thus only 12 pages long. GCD gives credit for the Lana story entirely to Papp. Do you think the last few pages were drawn by another artist? It's certainly possible, but I guess we'll need to track down a copy to be sure.

Thanks, Karl. I'd hate to think I'm getting old enough that the "classics" are getting confused in my head, but I think the Pete Ross story I referred to might actually be different from the "Detection Kit" tale.

I'll have do some invesstigating.

Wow! What a great site! It took about 15 minutes too find it (mostly because I kept getting distracted by all the great stuff there.

But here it is, the story I was confused about:

Superboy No. 96 April 1962
“The New Boy of Steel” (Part 1; 13 pages)
Part 2: “The Enemy Superboy” (12 pages)

Artists: George Papp (part 1), Al Plastino (part 2) THIS IS WHAT JARRED ME AS A KID!

Synopsis: A Kryptonite ray of Lex Luthor’s has an unexpected affect when it is altered by a photographer’s flash into a beam that transfers Superboy’s powers to Pete Ross, who is standing beside him at the time. Using his new powers, Pete Ross takes a time trip three days into the future and sees a headline on the Daily Planet building in Metropolis indicating that Lex Luthor will destroy Superboy in that time. Thus, Pete takes a Superboy costume from one of Clark’s robots, acts arrogantly towards his former friend, and takes on the identity of Superboy so that he will suffer whatever fate is in store for the Boy of Steel.

Thanks for your help. Now I'm going back to peruse those old Superboy stories again. What fun!

OK, let's review:

  1. The "Superboy Archives, V1" are on hold for some reason. This book would contain material from 1945-1946, and
  2. There is a constant interest in a Silver Age Superman Archive

So why not scratch 2 itches with one book? A Silver Age Superboy makes perfect sense!

This is a perfect idea, always provided that the delay isn't because of some rights or royalties dispute with the Siegel estate. That would presumably affect Superboy material from all periods.

But is Superboy big enough to have 2 different Archive lines running concurrently? And how many GA Superboy volumes would there be before it catches up to the Boy Of Steel Archives? And more importantly, do we need 18 + Superboy Archives?

I think the question of how much Superboy material the market will bear has more to do with how often an archive featuring Superboy is published than it does with the number of titles involved.
In fact, I'd guess that two lines, alternating, might well give DC higher net sales than either one alone would have, even leaving aside the advantage of having two #1 volumes.

The only question I have is, which series--Golden Age Superboy or Silver Age--would have the most Superbaby stories?

My personal preference would be for the Superboy archives to start at G.A. But if it had to start at the S.A. then so be it.

I love this stuff. LGOSH, Supergirl, have a Krypto archive if need be, even a Legion of Super Pets archive.

But at whatever age the Superboy archives start, begin the archives now.

What do you folks think?

I have a letter from Craig Flessel in which he denies he ever inked anything by Curt Swan. All the "Flessel" inked Swan stories in the various indexes on the web are most likely really inked by John Fischetti. Though some appear to me to be Stan Kaye. It sure would have been nice if DC had bothered to keep records.

I agree.
The only consolation for some of us is that it at least gives us something to do in our spare time - trying to identify writers and artists (the latter perhaps more successfully in my case) of mainly pre-1970 non-credited DC comics.
I am amazed the number of times that even DC get the credits wrong in reprints published from the 1970s on.
They are not alone, however, many comics' web sites give incorrect credits, even the normally sound Grand Comics Database.
Apart from Bob Kane frequently being credited for others work, usually Sheldon Moldoff's, one of the more common errors also seems to involve Moldoff (and Stan Kaye and others) inks being wrongly credited to George Klein.
